Analysis of Foam Concentrates for PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid) Content
We inform that the testing laboratory LLC “Rostov Research Center” performs analysis of foam concentrates of any brand to determine the mass concentration of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). The laboratory is accredited in the National Accreditation System (NSA), record No. RA.RU21RT74 dated 10.06.2025.
LLC “Rostov Research Center” (RRC, Rostov-on-Don) is an independent accredited testing laboratory specializing in physico-chemical and environmental analyses. RRC is a partner of RPA LLC “Dontechcenter” in laboratory testing, material quality control, and verification of ship system characteristics.
According to the requirements of the International Convention SOLAS and IMO circulars MSC.1/Circ.1312 and MSC.1/Circ.1452, from 1 January 2026 the use and storage of foam concentrates containing PFOS on ships will be prohibited. For vessels already in operation, the requirement takes effect at the first survey after this date. For newbuilds, it applies from commissioning. The PFOS content limit above which the foam concentrate is considered non-compliant is set at 10 mg/kg (0.001 % by mass).
Actions required for shipowners and operators:
- • Carry out an inventory of all foam concentrates on board, including storage and spare quantities;
- • Take samples and send them to an accredited laboratory to determine the PFOS concentration;
- • If PFOS content exceeds the threshold value — replace the concentrate with a PFOS-free type, confirming performance characteristics and recalculating the dosing and firefighting system parameters;
- • Update ship documentation, including specifications and test protocols, for presentation during survey.
PFOS belongs to the class of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), characterized by high persistence and bioaccumulation. International environmental and maritime standards aim for the gradual elimination of such substances and the prevention of their release into the environment.
The RRC laboratory performs foam concentrate analysis according to approved methods and issues test reports accepted by classification societies, including RMRS.
You can submit a request through Dontechcenter. Our specialists will arrange sample collection, delivery to the laboratory, documentation, and support for foam concentrate replacement with full recalculation of the firefighting system.
